This project is a proposal for the 2016 NGV Summer Pavilion, our entry in the design competition run by the National Gallery of Victoria.

The temporary pavilion is located in the NGV Grollo Equiset Garden, the brief was to provide a flexible space which would accommodate a number of possible uses. The basis for our proposal was drawn from a number of site observations, in particular how visitors engaged with the 2015 pavilion. The visitors often relocated the tables and chairs from under the pavilion in order to sit in the shade beneath the surrounding trees.

Our analysis of this behaviour led to the provision of two ‘floors’ located beneath the groups of trees, these floors were to accommodate a number of tables and chairs. The footprint, created by offsetting the centreline of 4 trees, was repeated in the form of a benchseat and a shade canopy. The canopy is constructed from a series of Macrame elements, layered up to create a dense shade in areas, yet open enough to permit the sun’s dappled light in others. Referencing the quality of light sort by numerous visitors seeking refuge under the surrounding tree canopies.
