This project is located in Eltham, a leafy suburb 25km north of Melbourne in Victoria.
The project brief involved the design of two detached townhouses, essentially two residential dwellings located on a single plot of land.
Due to the steep slope of the site, each townhouse is partially embedded into the earth. Each townhouse is sited to maximise view from both dwellings. Burring a portion of each Townhouse further increased access to the distant views over the valley to the west, whilst also creating the opportunity for a series of sunken gardens and courtyard spaces.
At lower ground level, each Townhouse is characterised by the use of solid, heavy, masonry walls which enclose the internal spaces and external courtyards gardens. The upper levels contrast the enclosed quality of the lower level, where solid walls are replaced with glass and fine timber screen used to block sun and increase privacy.
