PROGRAM: MULTI RESIDENTIAL

STATUS: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

This project is located in Albion, a suburb 13km west of Melbourne in Victoria, surrounded by heavy industry.
The brief was for two detached Townhouses, designed to create a secluded oasis in a dry, suburban landscape.

At ground level, the key living spaces have a strong relationship to a central Courtyard space. The Courtyard, whilst functioning as a ‘backyard’ also acts as a light well providing daylight and natural ventilation to the internal spaces. The Courtyard creates visual distance between the public and private internal spaces, making the dwelling feel bigger whilst actually being quite modest in size.

The ‘box-like’ form of the Townhouse development draws reference from neighbouring double storey, red/brown brick apartment buildings. The Corten Cladding of the new development draws on the red/brown palette of the neighbouring apartments, creating a new modern typology, one sitting between a multiunit Apartment Building and the detached house.
