This project book ends a row of Victoria workers cottages in Hawthorn, VIC.
The design references the scale, massing, rhythm and repetition of the existing street. Reinterpreting the ‘Workers Cottage’ typology. Subtle detailing, such as the scale and placement of the street window, draw further connections between the new cottage and the neighbouring dwellings.
The cottage presents as a monolithic, enclosed structure to the street, gradually opening up toward the rear courtyard. Operable shutters and screens allow the occupants to control their relationship with both the street and the passing of the sun.
